The department of Mobile Network Architecture in Bell Labs, Munich, is offering the opportunity for a student to pursue a PhD degree in communication engineering in collaboration with the University of Kaiserslautern, Institute of Wireless Communication and Navigation (WiCoN) headed by Professor Hans Schotten. The thesis work will be conducted in Munich and is expected to be completed within 3 years.
Scope of the PhD thesis
With the concept of Industry 4.0, the paradigm of “anything connected” arrives the industrial manufacturing processes, and herewith the heart of the value chain of the industrial society. Unwired and location-independent controlling of the industrial production lines with exchange of timing-critical sensor data in new propagation environments requires novel mobile communication techniques based on a holistic consideration of telecommunication and information technology depending on the context and the semantics of data. As an example, closed-loop control mechanisms with ultra-low latency requirements mean that on the one hand, data needs to be processed immediately and in situ. On the other hand, data analytics will be employed for a proactive management of failure cases and for process optimization. The two cases need different data communication networks with respect to different logical and contextual topologies. The challenge is to develop context-aware techniques for joint processing and communication of data in industrial environments such that “the right data is at the right place at the right time”.
This PhD thesis includes the following topics:
- Resilient and context-adaptive radio communication in industrial environment;
- Integration of mobile network communication processes, topologies, and methods into data processing in an industrial environment;
- Developing of new application of in-network processing under QoS constraints;
- Implementation and evaluation of algorithms in proto-typical lab environment.
Qualifications and Skills
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate who is enthusiastic about developing breakthrough innovations and participate in cutting edge research in Nokia Bell Labs.
A diploma or master degree in communications, information theory or computer science with focus on distributed systems with a grade of not worse then 2.0 (applicable in the German grade system) is required, as well as a good knowledge in communication networks, programming languages (e.g., C++, Java), and tools for performance evaluation (e.g., Matlab). Most importantly, the applicant should be willing and able to get engaged in novel disruptive research areas, which will require the applicant to learn new skills.
The applicant should be highly proficient in spoken and written English, and should have the ability to conduct independent research while also collaborating in team in a multicultural environment.
