With the fourth industrial revolution the implementation of a reliable communication layer capable to deal with a significant increase of the number of assets, volume and variety of information will become fundamental. The reaction times in future manufacturing system has to be very short for time-critical applications like Safety. 5G promises to be a key enabler for Factories of the Future. It will provide a unified communication platform to disrupt with new business models and overcome the shortcomings of current communication technologies. The 5G air interface will be optimized for industrial applications as well. It will support a large number of devices, time-critical process optimization inside factory with low latency and high reliability for real-time closed loop communication between machines, sensors and the core network to increase efficiency and flexibility.
