Current big data streaming frameworks focus mainly on the scalability of real-time stream data processing, and are not flexible, controllable, and programmable enough to accomodate dynamic streaming application needs. For example, current frameworks do not deal well with use cases like updating routing and computation logic, or enabling live debugging for a running topology. To address these problems, we propose an SDN-based real-time big data streaming framework called Typhoon, that tightly integrates SDN functionality into a realtime stream framework to provide a highly flexible system. Typhoon uses SDN to provide on-the-fly programmability of both the application and network layer, using well-defined interfaces and protocols. In addition, Typhoon's SDN controller exposes cross-layer information, from both the application and the network, to SDN control plane applications to enhance the framework's functionality. We introduce several SDN control plane applications to illustrate these benefits
