Biography

Sander van Valkenburg is leading the Application & Solution SW Research team in the Integrated Solutions & Experiences Lab, that creates innovative applications and solutions by turning disruptive research and technologies into practical systems. The team builds end-to-end concept solutions and apps that are ready for real-life testing in Industry 4.0 setting. The research focus areas of the team include cloud and mobile software, environmental monitoring, digital twins, no-code/low-code service creation and orchestration and IoT data processing.

Sander has a long and varied experience in software engineering and connectivity.  He joined Nokia Research Center in 1998 and was Nokia delegate in Bluetooth and Unlicensed Mobile Access standardization forums. After that he worked as lead software engineer for the Bluetooth stack and middleware of Symbian, the then leading smartphone OS.

He then moved to a startup, as tech lead for the Nimbuzz instant messaging app, followed by a stint on various traffic mobility projects at Vialis. Since rejoining Nokia in 2013, he has worked as principal software engineer on the embedded software of an IoT sensor device at HERE, a the companion app of a digital health wearable device at Nokia Technologies, and at Bell Labs on an integrated communications app, before taking over as engineering manager in 2018.

Sander holds a Master’s degree in electrical engineering from Delft University of Technology.
