Research Interests


Originally, Michel Le Pallec was an engineer specialized in optoelectronic/semiconductor devices. In 1992, he received his Diploma of Engineering in the field of semiconductor components from the Institut National Polytechnique of Grenoble. In 1997, he received, with honors, his PhD from the University Joseph Fourier, Grenoble. He worked for 6 years within the former Alcatel company, on the development of advanced optoelectronic components (modulators and ILMs). Then, he joined the Alcatel Research & Innovation/Packet Transport Infrastructure strategic project in 2005 and contributed to the backhauling activities in Metro Ethernet networks. He particularly worked on synchronization issues over packet switched networks. Taking a recognize expertise position at the former Alcatel-Lucent level, he actively participated in a cross-BG development effort (feature alignment) and took over an ALU representative role at related standard organizations (IEEE, ITU-T) jointly with IPD (Peter Roberts). This contribution successfully led to many patents and to the transfer of a cross product solution. In the continuity of this contribution, he also investigated End-to-End QoS aspects in the Bell Labs Advanced Internet Research department by addressing stringent end to end latency requirements at the application level (10-100ms). Capitalizing on this rich experience, Michel was involved in the modeling of IoT (Internet of Things) services within the End-to-End Networks and Service Automation (ENSA) Lab, between 2015 and 2018. Within the 10X SAVOC (Self-Adaptive Virtual Object Chaining) project, his research work focused on the identification of IoT services by understanding how connected objects were composed. To this aim, a graph-based composition model (Typed Attributed Graph) was leveraged and the overall approach demonstrated. Since January 2019, Michel has been involved in the management of automated IoT services/ applications by considering a SDN-based architecture. More specifically, he has been leading the new 10X Service Automation project, which addresses the reliable composition and instantiation (IT and network resource provisioning/ allocation) of automated IoT services. This project, supported by an INRIA collaboration, particularly targets the Industrial IoT.

Thanks to this  20- year-career in Research and Innovation, Michel LE PALLEC has participated in many appealing projects. As a result, he has authored or co-authored many scientific publications (>30) and, to date, he owns more than 40 active patents.

Professional activities


The huge growth of the Internet of Things is opening the door to an unprecedented set of new and unanticipated services, unforeseen either by service providers or by end-users themselves. Within this fast evolving environment (up to 500 devices per user in 2022), end users are unable to manage and benefit from this new service space. Delegating this role to ISPs (or OTTs) – letting end-users to compose services they want - raises new issues or concerns in terms of Identification, management and presentation of this larger service space augmented by the emerging IoT market


The approach relies on a unified management model de-segmenting IT and networking management while Integrating the IoT space where all resources are represented as virtual objects. Considering end-users as virtual objects allows for considering the service composition problem as the management of chains of Virtual Objects. This approach relies on 4 building blocks

  • Abstraction or modeling of each resources: (IT, network, applications, content, IoT, user) (functional modeling, interfaces, communication requirements)
  • Graph theory for composing services regarding to the combination of abstracted ‘resources’ (Virtual object)
  • Semantic analysis for filtering capable compositions regarding to end-user expectations
  • Competition: all companies working on service composition problems / service chains


While delegating the management role to ISPs (or OTTs) better serving end-user service requests or expectations with expected QoE by providing an unified management tool for all resources to ISPs (or OTTs) . The management of VO (virtual object ) chains is a service composition tool allowing for cleverly combining all hardware and software resources upon end-user service requests/predictions while taking into account expected QoE. As noticeable, this tool might be considered as a brain driving a SDN controller Applies in the NFV problem space by providing the missing automatic composition of NFV chains.
