Biography

Doru is a Bell Labs Fellow, recognized ‘for bridging the gap between theory and practice with key innovations at the foundation of the first metro cell products, commercial wireless capacity planning services and network protocols optimization solutions’.

He drives one of the fastest growing businesses with Nokia Enterprise as the Head of private wireless networks for digital industries in North America. In this role, he leverages his broad expertise on cutting-edge technologies (wireless communications, industrial IoT, digital automation cloud, data analytics, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Leaning) to bring advanced industrial-grade private wireless solutions to markets. By combining private wireless networking solutions and Industry 4.0 expertise, Doru and his team focus on the digital transformation of asset-intensive industries, including manufacturing, automotive, logistics, retail, transportation, energy and utilities. This is about fusing physical and digital processes by connecting all sensors, machines, and workers in the most flexible, affordable, and reliable way available.

Doru started his career as a Senior Research Engineer with Motorola Research Labs, Paris, France (1998 – 2001). He has been with Bell Labs in New Jersey since 2001, where he became a Bell Labs Fellow in 2016. While at Bell Labs, he has been affiliated with Lucent Technologies, Alcatel-Lucent, and now Nokia, as parent companies. Prior to his current senior executive role, he held a variety of senior leadership positions in research, applied research, management of research and consultancy, including Sr. Director and the Edge Cloud innovation Domain Leader at Nokia Mobile Networks’ CTO, with responsibilities for accelerating innovations in 5G, mobile network virtualization, mobile cloud computing, IoT, and verticals for adding business value to networks.

He holds 37 independent patents awarded in multiple countries and over 100 peer-reviewed publications/tutorials/keynotes. This includes scientific journals, book chapters, and refereed conferences. Dr. Calin has been leading the creation and incubation of novel technologies from inception stage to field trials in customer networks and market adoption. His innovations include critical patents and intellectual property which laid the foundation for the small cell products, wireless capacity planning services and network protocols optimization solutions. He is the recipient of several major awards, including two Bell Labs President’s Gold Awards, four Bell Labs Teamwork Awards, the IEEE WCNC 2015 Best Paper Award, and the Motorola 3GPP Standard Award.

Dr. Calin served as an Associate Editor of IEEE Communications Letters (2026 – 2018) and has been an Editorial Board Member of the Wireless Personal Communications International Journal since 2016. He has been serving as an Adjunct Professor of Electrical Engineering at Columbia University in New York City since 2009.

He received a M.S. degree in electrical engineering from the University Politehnica of Bucharest, Romania and, a M.S. degree in computer science information technologies for industrial systems and a PhD (High Hons.) in computer systems networking and telecommunications from the Universitė de Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, France.
