Bernd Franz joined Alcatel SEL AG, research centre Stuttgart in 1987. He was working then on optical transmission systems for very high bitrates. He contributed to the world-wide first 10 Gb/s (1995) and 40 Gb/s (1998) field trials (ACTS-TRAVEL, -SPEED projects, respectively) and the realization of first 40 Gb/s test prototypes for OND. From 2001 to 2009 Bernd was leading a working group on high speed electronics, which realized basic circuits for 40 and 100 Gb/s and various electronic equalizers for 40 Gb/s using most advanced SiGe and InP technologies. During this time he evaluated the performance of these electronic equalizers. From 2010 to 2014 he worked on optical spatial multiplexing systems. Here he investigated mode group division multiplexing using a standard graded-index multi-mode fiber as multi-path transmission medium in combination with direct detection receivers. Currently Bernd investigates concepts for Petabit switches.
Bernd Franz received the Dipl. Ing. (Msc.) in Electrical Engineering from Technical University of Braunschweig in 1984.
