Following his Dipl.-Ing. degree in electrical engineering / computer science in 1991 he has been with the Institute of Communication Networks and Computer Engineering at the Univ. of Stuttgart as a member of the scientific staff.

In 1998, he joined the Alcatel Research Center where he was responsible for multiple research projects on IP-centric access and high-speed metro networks. Later he initiated new research activities on IP multimedia services and related border security elements as well as peer-to-peer technologies for conversational services.

From 2005 on he was heading a research unit within the Alcatel-Lucent global research and innovation organization committed to IMS and beyond infrastructures; including standardization at IETF and ETSI. Since the merger of Alcatel and Lucent 2007/08 he was heading a Bell Labs group working on new concepts combining cloud technologies and distribution infrastructures for the in-network processing of media-rich applications. His current activities within the Bell Labs IP Platforms Program are centered around elastic IMS platforms.
