Biography

Lieven Trappeniers is leading the "Service Flexibility" software & systems research group in Bell Labs focusing on the programmability and efficient deployment of stream-intensive services (incl. M2M platform research) as well as on new techniques to make workflow based services more flexible and adaptive. The research group is located in Antwerp (Belgium), Murray Hill (US), and Villarceaux (France).
Lieven joined Alcatel's Research & Innovation division in 2000 and his early research focused on CPE service platforms and broadband service selection. Later on, as his research moved from the network layers up to the application and end-user experience layer, his work addressed the next-generation of broadband family applications, with particular focus on new ways for users to interact with media and communication. Lieven was leading the team within Alcatel that created AmigoTV, a social TV application.
As a result of the Internet-of-Things (IoT) research that Lieven was leading as from 2006, the Alcatel-Lucent TouchaTag Venture on the Internet-of-Things was created (www.touchatag.com). Lieven continued his IoT research leading a multi-disciplinary research team (bringing together computer scientists with product designers, a sociologist and usability engineers) and created Casensa, a prototype for assisted living for elderly (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMVZIc_MWh8).
More recently, SenseTale (www.sensetale.com) was launched. SenseTale started from the vision that providing Do-it-Yourself (DiY) tools to "program the environment" will unlock a wave of end-user creativity for the IoT that will surpass the user-created content disruption brought earlier by the Web2.0. The SenseTale public prototype showed how non-technical users could create applications for their connected devices (and the Internet-of-Things at large). SenseTale offered an open marketplace where live datastreams as well as (templated) services could be shared and re-used in a collaborative manner. See also http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87eBhetX4PI. As such, SenseTale offers a B2B and B2B2C marketplace for M2M applications.

Lieven is the author of 40+ patent applications.
