VoIP over EV-DO networks
In these projects we are looking at various aspects for supporting VoIP over CDMA EV-DO networks.
This project is about real-time monitoring of VoIP service quality. We are designing monitoring probes that can be deployed at different elements of the radio access network (EV-DO RAN) and the core network with minimal or no impact on the network performance. The information collected by these probes can be analyzed to evaluate in real-time the health of the network and of the VoIP services. Furthermore, this can help identify the bottleneck network segments that affect the VoIP service quality.
Header Compression
VoIP codecs generate small packets for which the header (IP/UDP/RTP) overhead is quite large. This results in inefficiencies when transporting these packets over bandwidth constrained wireless links. Thus the use of header compression for reducing VoIP header size becomes critical for VoIP over EV-DO networks. However care must be taken to ensure that this does not introduce any inefficiencies when dealing with packet losses and re-ordering. In this project we are exploring these aspects of header compression schemes.
QoS support in the EV-DO Backhaul
In this project we are studying the impact of limited backhaul bandwidth on the performance of VoIP services and ways of dealing with this limited bandwidth (e.g. header compression, flow control, scheduling etc)
iOptimize: Optimization and Bandwidth Recovery for Data networks
iOptimize analyzes and optimizes service providers’ connection-oriented data networks (e.g. ATM, MPLS). In these networks, online connection routing is used to set up connections quickly, but the simple path selection scheme and the limited information available for online routing can cause network capacity to be used inefficiently. This may result in the loss or disruption of user data transmissions, leading to a degraded quality of service (QoS) in a network capable of supporting much higher throughput. The objective of iOptimize is to detect and analyze such inefficiencies and to offset them by the occasional rerouting of a selected set of connections, while causing little or no disruption of the existing data services and network operations. By helping service providers support data transport services at the QoS levels desired, iOptimize lets them make the most of their existing network resources. Moreover, by tuning their networks to perform at optimal efficiency, it improves their end users’ experience.
