I was born in the city of Bombay (now called Mumbai), India. It is the biggest and the best city in India, with a population of more than 10 million. I did most of my schooling in Chembur, a suburb of Bombay.

Education

From 1988 to 1992, I attended the University of Bombay. In 1992, I completed Bachelor of Engineering (B.E) in Computer Engineering, with 64% agg. (1st Class Honors).

In July 1995, I started my Master's at the Indian Institute of Technology (Bombay), where I worked with the database group. In 1997, I received my Master of Technology (M.Tech) in Computer Science and Engineering.

My Master's thesis was titled Transaction Management in Parallel Databases [ps] [pdf]. The work looks at designing recovery and checkpointing strategies for Shared Disk Parallel Databases. The algorithms were also implemented as part of the Brahma parallel database project developed at IIT Bombay.

Professional Career

CMC Ltd. (July 1992 to April 1993)

After completing my undergraduate degree I joined CMC Limited (a Government of India Enterprise). My first assignment was to work with the Indian Railways Reservation System. And, this was my first encounter with a database system. The reservation system consisted of a proprietary database system written in FORTRAN on Digital VAX clusters running VMS.

Ravi Database Consultants Pvt. Ltd. (April 1993 to July 1995)

In April 1993, I joined Ravi Database Consultants Pvt. Ltd. (RDC), where I developed image database applications for the Windows platforms on a proprietary object-oriented database. Some of the applications that I built or worked on, include:
  • Electronic parts catalog for the Indian auto giant, TELCO.
  • Document imaging and management system for the Indian electronics company, Videocon.
  • Medical imaging and reporting system to be sold with equipment made by Philips.
RDC is famous for its portals, namely - http://www.indiaworld.co.in, http://www.samachar.com and others.

Bell-Labs Research, Lucent Technologies (March 1997 onwards)

In March 1997, after obtaining my Masters degree, I joined Bell-Labs Research, initially working as a consultant and later (in 1998) becoming a Member of Technical Staff.

At Bell-Labs, I was part of the Database Principles Research Department. Our Department addressed issues that include :

  • information retrieval,
  • database system design,
  • management of complex data types, and
  • user-interface paradigms
We also developed research prototypes that illuminate various systems issues related to data management.

Currently, I am leading a group in the Networking Research Lab focused on network management and data management issues. Some areas of contributions include :

  • real-time network discovery,
  • inventory and topology acquisiton,
  • network performance monitoring,
  • network problem detection and root-cause analysis, and
  • multi-vendor multi-technology integration tools
Since 2002, I have been part of the core team that has developed the network management research strategy in Bell Labs. The strategy process acts as the driver in launching new initiatives and technology to be built in Bell Labs
