Wireless Networking
Router Architecture
Low level and kernel development

Projects:
SoftRouter
The SoftRouter project proposes a new router architecture that separates control plane and forwarding plane to achieve faster convergence, higher security, better scalability and lowered cost. Control plane functions are aggregated and implemented on a few smart servers which can control forwarding elements that are multiple network hops away.

Scalable RNC
Evaluation of the UMTS Base Station Controller (BSC) to answer the questions how vulnerable the current BSC architecture is to traffic scenarios like hot spots and high mobility, how load balancing should look like to avoid inter-system overload conditions, and how an architectural modification of the BSC can lower the vulnerability to these traffic scenarios. The problem was approached by complementing the current traffic model with hot spots and mobility, building a BSC simulator, simulation of various traffic scenarios, and simulation of the BSC architecture modifications.

CWAVE
The CWAVE project defines an all-IP-based network architecture for wireless access networks. The Lucent MAX TNT/APX8000 family was chosen as platform to implement CDMA Radio Network Controller (RNC) network functionalities like frame selection, power control, and hand-offs over an IP transport. The Lucent Microcell Basestation was modified  to support aggregated IP over T1 to the RNC.

VIPER
The Value added IP Edge Router (VIPER) project was based on Packet Star Router and provided a high port density with 12 T3 interfaces per line card, which supported channelized and clear T3. In combination with a pipeline card it is capable of IP routing, classifying and policing at line speed.
