User Survey - The Suggestions

We received a great number of suggestions in the free-form section of the survey. To view the complete text, follow this link.

We will be annotating the suggestions with responses in the near future, in time for the next newsletter. In the meantime, though, be assured that we have read them and are acting on them wherever possible.

Of course, some of the suggestions from v5.0 and v5.1 customers ask for changes or enhancements that have been accomplished in later releases. If you are on a non-current release, you might wish to take a look at the v5.1 or v5.2 release notes, to see if the new features are attractive to your installation.

PC Sablime® in v5.2 ?

Several years ago, Sablime® released a ".exe" for accessing Sablime® from a Windows PC.

The original version was targeted at Windows 3.1, and then Windows '95. Later, we released a new PC Sablime® client that facilitated the use of long file names.

These clients have been widely used, but they represent a development and administrative headache. Unlike the normal Sablime® release, each and every PC must be updated when a new feature is added, or a bug fixed.

Web Sablime®, being platform independent and server hosted, is Gratuitous Graphicdesigned to permit GUI execution of Sablime® from PCs and other clients without the need for locally installed software.

As the Sablime® customer base migrates to Web Sablime® for their GUI needs, overall Sablime® development can be accelerated. Web Sablime® is not only easier to administer, it is both easier to develop and to test than the PC Sablime® (or X Sablime) clients are.

With all this in mind, the v5.1 release notes from early 1999 reported that the PC Sablime® client would no longer be upgraded. The v5.2 release does not include the client executable.

We recognize, however, that cutover to Web Sablime® is not always an immediate option. Some customers wish to upgrade from v5.0 to v5.2, in order to make use of the new features but don't wish to give up PC Sablime® right away..

To address this desire, we studied the use of the existing PC Sablime® clients against the v5.2 environment.

It appears that there is only one PC Sablime® command which is incapable of running in this environment. The testpass command, which acquired several new capabilities in v5.2 can not be launched from the PC Sablime® client (against a v5.2 database).

While we don't really recommend or support this configuration, it appears that the existing long-file-name PC Sablime® client from v5.0 or v5.1 can continue to be used with the v5.2 database.

Another option for v5.0 customers is to upgrade to v5.1. The "builder" and "Web Sablime" components of the v5.2 release are downloadable and usable with a v5.1 database, and since v5.1 also contains the PC client, this could supply a migration environment for PC Sablime® users.

 Commentary

Thank you to everyone who responded to the survey. We are already modifying our planning to take your answers into account.

The overwhelmingly positive nature of the responses is particularly gratifying.

We realize that Sablime® has much room for improvement, and that users have choices in their Configuration Management domain.

We are working hard to make sure that Sablime® remains a choice worth making.

So What Are We Going To Do About It?

For starters, as a direct result of a suggestion from the survey, we're changing the create and report commands so that they no longer require an active license.

This will allow users to create and monitor the progress of MRs without taking up a slot in the license file. These users will still need a PTS record, but they will not need to be "licensed".

Sablime® v5.2, Update #1, due in October, will include this change and will address some other concerns expressed in the survey suggestions. See the following article about the update for more information.

Sablime® v5.2 Update #1

In October, Sablime® plans to release v5.2, Update #1. This update follows up the v5.2 release with some enhancements to the new Web Sablime®, some changes and enhancements in response to User Survey suggestions, as well as other small enhancements and, OK, a few bug fixes.

When we release the update, we will also apply the update to the base release. This means that if you download v5.2 after the update is released, you will automatically get the update.

If you already have v5.2, then you will be able to download and apply the update with minimal interruption. It shouldn't even be necessary to stop your system.

This update does not require any database migration, and its changes are isolated to a handful of files. We will have thoroughly tested the update and are confident that it can be installed without significant risk.

The new update script permits easy installation (and de-installation, if desired).
