Bell Labs Future X Days in Dublin

We had a fantastic day in Dublin this year. We celebrated 10 years of Bell Labs in Ireland, and hosted a unique open door event at our facility in Blanchardstown to showcase how Bell Labs is “Inventing the Network of You” through a series of Future X projects.

Starting at 10am, we were joined by

  • Damien English, Minister of State for Skills, Research & Innovation,
  • Geoff Shakespeare, Managing Director - Technology Evolution and Development, Eircom, and
  • Marcus Weldon, Bell Labs President and Alcatel-Lucent CTO

who will share their perspectives on the evolution of the communications network and the importance of the innovation eco-system in delivering on the “Network of You”.

After a networking lunch, tours of the Future X technology showcase included 16 fascinating technology demonstrations, such as

  • world-leading XG-FAST technology, delivering multiple Gbit/s to end users over several tens of meters of copper cabling,
  • a novel virtual CPE which shows how a low-cost residential gateway can be complemented by virtual functionality in the network to form a powerful home gateway platform,
  • future, self-powered small-cell basestation technology with wireless backhaul,
  • an entirely new photonics cooling architecture from the laser to the rack,

plus many more.
