Karlsruhe Institute of Technology

On October 01, 2009, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT - www.kit.edu) was founded by a merger of Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe and Universität Karlsruhe. KIT bundles the missions of both precursory institutions: a university of the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg with teaching and research of a large-scale institution of the Helmholtz Association. KIT conducts program-oriented provident research on behalf of the Federal Republic of Germany. Within these missions, KIT is operating along the three strategic fields of action of research, teaching and innovation. With about 8500 employees and an annual budget of about EUR 655 million, KIT is one of the largest research and teaching institutions worldwide. It has the potential to assume a top position worldwide in its selected fields of research. The objective: KIT will become an institution of top research and excellent scientific education as well as a prominent location of academic life, life-long learning, comprehensive advanced training, unrestricted exchange of know-how, and sustainable innovation culture.

"ICT is a key enabler of social, environmental and economic sustainability. Powerful ICT infrastructures do not only form the backbone of modern information society, but are also indispensable for further improving the resource efficiency in production, transportation and energy distribution. However, the power consumption of ICT itself is steadily growing. Leaving this problem unsolved will render insoluble many other problems. KIT's mission is to provide the scientific and technological basis for sustainable development. Being part of the GreenTouch initiative is hence an essential element of our mission."

- Professor Christian Koos, Integrated Photonic Devices and Systems Group, Institute of Photonics and Quantum Electronics, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology
