This event featured a discussion on how telecommunication networks and the Internet are being re-designed to be energy efficient, how information and communication technologies (ICT) enable smarter and sustainable growth and how these developments will help the European Union reach its 2020 energy efficiency targets.

Traffic in communication networks is predicted to grow exponentially in the next decade, driven primarily by the dramatic rise in mobile video, new applications and services for consumers and businesses. Smarter and more sustainable communities are also increasingly relying on networks and information technologies to build and to enable energy efficiencies in adjacent industries.

Creating intelligent and energy efficient networks is a key driver for economic growth; yet this opportunity comes with significant challenges. Increased traffic is placing huge burdens on all networks, service providers and operators. There is only one way forward: we must make our networks more energy-efficient, enabling them to support this traffic growth in a sustainable and economically viable way. A number of global initiatives are underway to address these challenges. Among them, the GreenTouch Consortium, founded in 2010, was formed with the explicit mission to develop radical technology breakthroughs that will enable us to redesign networks to be dramatically more energy-efficient.

This event examined the necessity of developing greener networks and highlighted the underlying challenges and opportunities for creating the intelligent networks with perspectives from the entire ecosystem. A series of presentations and interactive panel discussions provided the opportunity to hear and engage industry thought-leaders as they articulated their vision for the design, development, deployment and management of networks, as well as their operation and specific applications and use cases. Conversations went beyond the near-future to project the long-term opportunities for technological breakthroughs. The GreenTouch Consortium also shared its current accomplishments, laying out its roadmap for achieving its goal of increasing network efficiency by a factor of 1,000 and discuss how these developments impact the EU 2020 targets.
