GreenTouch wins Energy Efficiency Award from Global Telecoms Business

London, June 8, 2010 – The GreenTouch consortium today announced that it has received an award for energy efficiency innovation  at this year’s Global Telecoms Business Innovation Awards at a recognition event held in London on June 7th.

The Global Telecoms Business Innovation Awards were first presented in 2007 and recognize the most innovative projects in the industry worldwide. The awards celebrate projects rather than products that involve collaboration between telecommunication network operators and vendors.

The GreenTouch Initiative is a global consortium of leading industry players, research institutions and non-governmental organizations who are shaping a vision for the sustainable future of the industry and for society and who have set themselves the ambitious goal of demonstrating within five years the key technologies needed to increase  the energy efficiency of communications networks by a factor of 1000 from current levels.  The consortium will achieve this goal by entirely re-designing networks and optimizing them for energy efficiency.

“In just a few months time, GreenTouch has evolved from an ambitious concept to a fully-fledged organization that has already achieved a number of key milestones,” said Gee Rittenhouse head of the GreenTouch Consortium and Vice-President of Research at Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs. “The award from Global Telecoms Business validates the progress we have made and is a clear vote of confidence in our ability to meet the ambitious goals we have set for ourselves.”

In presenting the Awards, Alan Burkitt-Gray, editor of Global Telecoms Business, commented: “This is the fourth time we’ve run our Innovation Awards and each year we’ve seen that the industry is working harder and harder to deliver exciting and innovative services to its customers worldwide. Congratulations to all the award winners. The industry is seeing a wave of innovation which is making a huge difference — to the companies working in the industry and to all of us in business and as consumers. They are making such a difference to the world. We want to celebrate what they are doing.”
