Telecom Networks, Energy Consumption Increased by 27% With Efficient Solutions

Energy saving is becoming a critical issue for ICT industry, as it grows dramatically in terms of volumes and subscribers all over the world. Attention so far has been put in bringing more efficiency at end user devices and Datacenters levels. Not enough attention has been put in what is in between, that is telecommunication infrastructure. That's why GreenTouch consortium has been launched in 2010 (China Mobile, Alcatel-Lucent, Samsung, Huawei are among members), with Fondazione Politecnico di Milano as the only Italian partner. GreenTouch focuses on environmental impacts of energy savings (less pollution), but also on the economic aspects. An interview with Thierry E. Klein, Network Energy Research Program leader at Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs Research gives more details on what is the expected impact on costs of operators as a consequence of more energy needed for future infrastructures and what are the solutions GreenTouch is working on to mitigate them.
