Fondazione Politecnico Di Milano to Host the Spring Members’ Meeting of Greentouch, the Consortium Dedicated to Improving Energy Efficiencies of Communications Networks

From May 5th through May 8th, Fondazione Politecnico di Milano will host the GreenTouch members’ meeting. The GreenTouch consortium was launched 4 years ago with the ambitious goal of redesigning networks to dramatically improve their energy efficiency

MILAN, 9th May 2014– Fondazione Politecnico di Milano will host at its premises in Piazza Leonardo da Vinci, from May 5th through May 8th, 2014, the spring members’ meeting of GreenTouch, the international consortium launched in 2010 with the ambitious goal of redesigning communications networks to dramatically improve their energy efficiency. During the four-day event, GreenTouch members will provide updates on the more than 16 projects currently underway and demonstrate new network architectures and technologies in development.

GreenTouch’s formation was motivated by the awareness that the telecommunications industry was, on a global level, second only to the transportation industry in terms of power consumption. Realizing that such consumption would not be sustainable in the light of the predicted network traffic boom of the coming years, leading Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry, academic and non-governmental research experts joined forces to fundamentally transform communications and data networks, including the Internet, and significantly reduce the carbon footprint of ICT devices, platforms and networks. The consortium is two-thirds of the way into its five-year mission of developing technologies, such as the previously-demonstrated Large Scale Antenna System and Bi-PON, to support the growth of ICT networks and network traffic in an economically and environmentally sustainable way.

Following four years of intense research efforts, last May GreenTouch announced research showing it was possible to reduce the energy consumption in communications networks by up to a 90% by 2020. The study was conducted as part of GreenTouch’s Green Meter analysis, undertaken by the consortium to assess progress towards its goal.

The next important milestone will be in mid-2015, when the consortium’s accomplishments will show the final results against its mission and and GreenTouch will begin to undertake new and even more challenging research goals.
GreenTouch, which periodically meets in one of the 23 participating countries, is formed by over 50 organizations (53% from Europe, 18% from North America, 29% from Asia), including industrial partners (27%), academic members (57%) and research centers (16%). Chairman of the consortium is Thierry Van Landegem, vice president of Open Innovation for Bell Labs.

University research centers have played a fundamental role in GreenTouch since its formation. As a matter of fact, the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering of Politecnico di Milano strongly supports Fondazione Politecnico di Milano as an active scientific member.

About Fondazione Politecnico Milano
Fondazione Politecnico di Milano was founded in 2003 through a joint effort between the Politecnico di Milano, major city and regional institutions and important corporations to support the university’s research projects and contribute to innovating and developing the economic, productive and administrative environment. To achieve these goals Fondazione Politecnico develops innovation projects and European projects. To commemorate its first ten years of operation, FPM transformed the Acceleratore di Impresa, Politecnico ‘s business incubator, into a modern structure designed to support innovative startups: PoliHub
